Punx Picnic

On Saturday I was to go to Hradec Kralove for the Flošna festival, but on the way to the gig we had a stop off to a small town for the Punx Picnic, so named after Oi Polloi's parody of "Teddy Bear's Picnic." Behind a giant, well lit soccer field was a small stage and about 120 punks. We pulled up the car past the front entry and I began to get nervous.

My friend Martin was about to place a set of his newly composed hip hop tracks as Bonus, and the between set tunes coming through the PA  were booty raps kitsch swung by Richard Cheese. It just didn't bode well, but after an icy beginning track, Martin managed to win over maybe thirty or so of the punks, who looked on first with curiousity and then began dancing when the beats ventured into more techno orientation and as his explicit pro-DIY ethic lyrics began to sink in. By the end he'd gotten a small but rabid applause and came off the stage exhilerated. Behind him during his short set the Polish hardcore punk band Eye For An Eye had been setting up, and as we got the gear in the car we heard the opening screams of lead vocalist Anna Koziel and familiar squelch of guitar. It felt good to have dropped in, mixed it up, and then gone on. Back in the car in the late August darkness, headed towards Hradec Kralove, the night had just begun.

Having a drink and having a laugh
Trading zines and tapes - and acting daft
Making new friends and playing the fool
So come to the punx picnic if you
know whats good for you!
